Notes and Definitions:

A jig is a type of dance.

Since this is a dance, it must be played in rhythm. It's a duple rhythm, actually 2 beats per measure on the first and fourth notes of the double triplet figure.

Think HEAVY-note-note MEDIUM-note-note for the rhythm.

The TAB (tabulature) is for guitars in EADGBE tuning.

For guitarists: The first strain (A) is all played in the first position. The second strain (B) is all played in the fifth position.

A strain is an old-fashioned term for a section of music. In this tune, one strain would be from the beginning to the first repeat.

Guitarists: First position is with the fingers on the first, second, third and fourth frets, one finger per fret. Fifth position is with the fingers on the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth frets, one finger per fret. I always try to play one finger per fret and my fingering for these tunes follows that. The only fingering marks I added to this piece (second strain) were where my preferred fingering didn't work because of one finger needing to be in two places either at once or too close together. Please note that this is the fingering that works for me. If you cannot play this fingering, you are permitted to rewrite it in such a way as you are able to play it.

The capital letters (C,G,D) over the top of the notation are for chords.

I originally found this in a book of fiddle tunes. I've played it on piano. I've played it on violin. I've played it on guitar. You may play it on any instrument that takes your fancy.

About Copyrights

The tune itself is ancient and out of copyright. This means is that you may play this music anywhere without paying anybody copyright.

HOWEVER, the transcription to guitar tab, fingering and chording are all my work, as is putting the notes into an art program and putting the page up on the web. This means that you may NOT copy the page I put up.

However, you MAY put a link on your website that will send people here to see it. In fact, I would be delighted. Thank you!
