Effie Lyon Howe's Genealogical Charts

Handwritten Header
Handwritten Header for the Papers

Sometime in the 1930s my mother, Irene Whitfield Chisholm, had a class in college where she was to make a chart of how her family went together. She started asking questions of her father and her grandmothers. She got back a number of letters with interesting answers and at some point, these charts.

I was always told that the bulk of the charts are handwritten by Effie Lyon Howe.

I have confirmed enough of the genealogical data in these charts to be reasonably sure of the accuracy of the facts. She would actually have met most of the people listed here.

NOTES ON BARNABAS PACKARD FAMILY:

This Barnabus Packard was apparently the son of Barnabas Packard Jr. and grandson of Barnabas Packard. (Information from the family researchs of RPackardSr and AzPack for a possible lineage.) The (rather fragile) proofs of connection are (a) that his daughter is named Polly Nash Packard and his father(?) married Polly Nash, and (2) that there was a Barnebas Packard III in known downlines in about the right place and time.

Ruth Snow married Barnebus Packard 23 July 1818 in Berkshire, Winsor, Massachusetts. (Lorenzo Snow is a relative.) (From records in the files of the Mormon library: IGI A184633-6599)

Polly Nash Packard, daughter of Barnebus/Ruth, born 18 July 1819 in Hampshire, Plainfield, Massachusetts. (IGI C502581-1056, Mormon library.)

Cynthia Cordelia Packard, daughter of Barnebas Packard/Ruth, November 27, 1820, Hampshire, Plainfield, Massachusetts. (C502581-1057, Mormon library.)

Irene Packard, daughter of Barnebas Packard & Ruth, born September 20, 1826, Hampshire, Plainfield, Massachusetts. (IGI C502581-1060, Mormon library.)

NOTES ON JOEL LYON FAMILY:

Letter to Effie from her cousin Ethel Steere(letter to be posted in full elsewhere on website): "Now I want to tell you a little about your relatives that possibly you have never known. You might some time want to claim for your children their right to relationship with those who fought in the Revolution. Their names are Cyrus Lyon and Ebeneazer Bisbee. Cyrus Lyons home was in Gorham Mass and his son, our grandfather, Joel Lyon went into Plainfield and married Mehetable Bisbee our grandma Lyon. Your father was born in Plainfield Mass and his birth is recorded there. I can give you the proof that they Cyrus Lyon and Ebeneazer Bisbee fought in the revolution if you should care for it."

From "Lyon Memorial" by Lyon(s) and Lyon. Shows Cyrus Lyon had son Joel Lyon (among other sons). This book shows many generations of ancestors as well. (Pages 68-69 in "Descendants of William Lyon, Fifth Generation" section.)

Joel Lyon born about 1788, Hampshire, Goshen, Massachusetts. (No parents listed.) (IGI, didn't write down the number, oops. Mormon library.)

Joel Lyon and Hitty Bisbee married 8 March 1821 in Hampshire, Plainfield, Massachusetts. (IGI M501753-0882, Mormon library.)

Martha Lyon, Joel Lyon/Kitty, 14 April 1824, Hampshire, Plainfield, Massachusetts. (IGI C502581-0944, Mormon library.)

1830 Census Plainfield, Hampshire, Massachusets, HAM415. Joel Lyon. Males: one under 5, one 5-10, one 30-40. Females: one under 5, one 30-40.

Joel Lyon had son Horatio Lyon by wife Kitty, 1821, Hampshire, Plainfield, Massachusetts. (IGI C502581-0843, Mormon library)

Mehetible Bisbee, daughter of Ebenezer Bisbee & Mehitable Shaw. Born 25 May 1800, Hampshire, Plainfield, Massachusetts. (IGI 8131702-14, Mormon library.)

NOTES:

I was told that Horatio & Irene Lyon lost five children at once to an epidemic of diptheria. This doesn't explain two of them being named Herbert. The first Herbert may have been an earlier death. Children died so easily and of so many things in those days. What was for sure, was that they had no other children living when Effie was born.

Effie Adella Lyon was born later, I think in another state. She grew up as an only child.

I don't know who typed this. The name "Helen Rae" written in is in Jack Chisholm's handwriting.
I haven't identified the other handwriting.
The word "parsonage" may mean where they were married, or it may mean that they lived in the parsonage
in Fall City for a time (as they did).
