Effie Lyon & John Elon Howe

Big JE Howe house in the snow

This is now the site of the Spring Glen trailer court.
Originally, the Spring Glen Road was a quarter mile away from the trailer court. It was
"renamed" (numbered) by the county and is no longer called Spring Glen.

John Elon Howe was born 23 May 1860 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus County, New York to Samuel Howe & Jane Manley. He had about ten siblings.

Effie Adela Lyon was born 26 February 1864 in McBride, Michigan to Horatio Lyon and Irene Packard. She was raised as an only child because her five siblings had all died in an epidemic before she was born.

J.E. Howe & Effie Lyon married on 28 April 1881.

Children:
Horatio "Hortie" "H.S." Samuel Howe born 3 August 1884 in Little Valley, New York
Arthur Vincent "Art", "A.V." Howe born 14 March 1887 in South Haven, Michigan
Elsie Caroline Howe born 25 August 1889 in Covert, Michigan
Isabel "Mabel" May Howe born 6 May 1893, died 6 May 1898 in Covert, Michigan
Augustus Millard "Millard" Howe born 14 July 1895 in Covert, Michigan
Willard Lyon "Bill" Howe born 18 March 1899 in Vaughn, Washington
Paul Raymond "Ray" Howe born 18 October 1905 in Tacoma, Washington

They were on their way to eastern Washington and it was snowing too hard to take the roads so they stayed over, with the Tarr family, if I remember what I was told. They were told of a nice 80 acre piece of homestead land still available. They moved in there and stayed. (Note: I still live on part of the original homestead!)

First they built a small house just to have shelter and then they built a larger house. Their daughter Elsie, when married, moved into the little house.

After Elsie Howe Whitfield died in 1924 leaving three children under the age of five behind, Effie & J.E. Howe raised them part of the time.

J.E. Howe died 8 February 1937 in Fall City, Washington and was buried in Fall City Cemetery.

Effie Lyon Howe died 10 October 1942 and was also buried in Fall City Cemetery.

Photographer: Jack Chisholm took the house photo and the photo of the five brothers. Irene Whitfield Chisholm may have taken the photos of her grandparents. The photographer for the formal portrait is unknown, but was probably in Michigan.
