Naphtha Soap

Yesterday (September 27, 2008), I was helping my 97 1/2 year old cousin Florence Howe Koss. We were hunting through her collection of recipe cards for a recipe for Peanut Butter Cookies. This is one of the cards that came up.

Florence said that this was in her mother's own handwriting. (Her mother being Burnie Stauffer Howe.)

Oh, we did finally find a recipe for Peanut Butter Cookies...in a recipe book. They were delicious. Sorry, didn't save you any.

Naphtha Soap
Naphtha Soap
This soap whitens clothes and makes washing easy.
I used 8 cans lye dissolving each can in 1 quart cold water, and let cool to blood heat.
Dissolve 4 pounds lump borax and 2 1/2 pounds Sal soda in hot water and let cool to blood heat.
Heat 40 pounds grease and let cool to just warm.
Add lye, first stirring well then the borax and the sal soda and stir.
