Dill Royle's Travels from 1890-1900 |
|
This list is assembled from what was found in her personal Bible & autograph book, diary, & other writings. Items without dates are left out of this list. Places are as accurate as I know.
Stuff in square brackets are my comments, and notes.
The cryptic items with a date, a name and a reference to a Bible verse are the ones out of her personal Bible. That would be the date (and place) that that minister spoke on that text. Most of the ministers defied my ability to find them on the web.
Unfortunately, most of the other people were also unfindable.
Her autograph book has her signature in the front
May 21, autograph of Eva Royle [Dill's sister]
May 24, autograph of Josie Royle McIvor [Dill's sister]
June 1, autograph of M. Haigh [Dill's sister]
June, 12, Autograph of George Gunderson
June 21, autograph "your loving cousin May"
July 30, autograph of Stuart A. Ferguson [See note below]
July 30, autograph of Mrs. Ferguson
NOTES:
I found out that Mrs. Ferguson had been left with the care of several children after a death in the family. They'd hired help to deal with too much to do. Apparently, Dill Royle was the help they hired. Stuart was apparently the eldest child. His handwriting is childlike.

Inez Beebe was the daughter of Marcus Plin Beebe and Leota F. Beebe. Her father started the first bank in Ipswich, South Dakota, which is where they lived. Her mother opened the home to temperence and sufferage workers. Inez Beebe later married Elwood Perisho.
Gertrude S. Beebe was apparently Inez Beebe's sister.

NOTES:
On 6 July 1893, a level 5 cyclone (tornado) swept through Iowa. The main victim was the town of Pomeroy. This was close enough to Chicago that it would have been major news there.
The Chicago World's Fair was a major influence on many things of the time, from industry and science to Frank L. Baum who is thought to have based parts of 'The Wizard of Oz' on what he saw at the fair and on the Pomeroy cyclone that happened at the same time..
Here are some links (please note, these are NOT ON MY SITE) to some interesting pages that will show you some of what the many, many visitors (including Dill Royle and Frank L. Baum) saw at the Chicago World's Fair. Virtual Tour. Information on Fair. Photos. Wikipedia. Table of Links
D.L.Moody was a famous evangelist who had a lot of influence at this point in history. He spoke during at the Chicago World's Fair.
