Irene Whitfield's Photo Album |
As a child, this was my very favorite photo album to flip through. This was because of the humorous labels on many of the pictures. Irene did not write them. She said that one of her relatives (John Whitfield?) had done so. I've included some of better bits of wit for posterity, but mostly only on this page.
Many of the pictures in the album are ones which we have no other copies of and no negatives for. They are possibly the only copies of the pictures in existance. Best guess is that the album covers approximately 1909 to 1940 in Irene Whitfield Chisholm's life.
I did sit down with her at one time and I asked her what the pictures were and put labels under them in careful printing in white ink. Unfortunately, we only stuck with the project for the first 29 pages, which was less than 1/3 of the book. I'm having to rely on other sources to figure out the rest of them. (No, the humorist did NOT do any useful labels.)

Humorously Labeled Photos
Waves rolling in, possibly Oregon coast.
Text: "Rolling her own"
Rolling your own is when you make your own cigarettes.
Irene's feet, I think. Probably showing off shoes
Text: "Greatest FEET of history"
Feat=feet, pronounced the same.
Jean Chisholm, eating an apple
Text: "Unemployed. Apples, 5 cents."
This was during the Great Depression, when lots of people
sold apples, or whatever, for 5 cents.
The label at the bottom (441-D) was Jack Chisholm's
identification of the photo, which means he may have
rephotographed this one.
Man in front of ancient auto
Text: "The only authentic picture of grandpa's accident."
I've already had to explain it to two people so here goes:
...this is funny because...
THERE WASN'T AN ACCIDENT!...This is a picture of an older
gent walking in front of a PARKED car.
