Reloading Information
| WARNING! NEVER ATTEMPT TO RELOAD WITHOUT CONSULTING A RELOADING MANUAL! |
This site is NOT intented to be a subsitute for a reloading manual rather it exists to aid knowledgable reloaders in developing loads for their K98ks. DO NOT attempt to reload until you have received proper instruction and have read / understood a quality reloading manual.
COMMON TERMS & DEFINITIONS
7,92x57 vs. 7.92x57:
Both are correct. The German system uses "," where we use "." and vise versa. I just to use the German style system for this site.
The Cartridge:
An assembled, case, primer, powder and bullet. This is what I mean when I refer to the 7,92x57mm round.
The Bullet:
The projectile fired from a firearm. I recommend your purchase jacketed bullets for serious use and there are many fine designs from a variety of companies. However, if you just shoot for a little sport consider using cast bullets. There are a variety of molds that can be found and they are much easier on the pocket book that jacketed bullets.
The Primer:
An explosive device situated in the center of the case head that is detonated by impact. There are many good primers on the market. Winchester Standard Large Rifle primers seem to work well from past experience. Federal is another fine brand.
Brass:
Also called a case is the container that holds all other components such as primer, powder and bullet. Any suitable cases should do. Reform them from .30-06 brass if necessary.
(see Shooting Clinic)
Military Brass vs. Commercial Brass:
So what's the difference? Simple military brass is usually thicker hence the internal case capacity is reduced when compared to commercial brass of the same caliber. Always reduce a load intended for commercial brass when using military brass!
Powder:
The fuel that once ignited generates great pressure and forces the bullet down the barrel. There are many fine types. I like H4895 but make your own selections.
WHY RELOAD IN THE FIRST PLACE?
- Accuracy: Many who reload discover that they can adjust their loads to suit the individual rifle hence the accuracy
- Pure Enjoyment: I am sure many out there will agree with me when I say that there is a certain satisfaction in shooting ammunition that you constructed yourself.
- Money: Face it whatever other reasons you have for reloading saving money is always an added bonus. Although you may fine you really don't save but end up shooting more instead. Still more bang for the buck.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I SQUEEZE THE K98k's TRIGGER?
- The K98k's firing pin strikes the primer igniting it
- This burning mixture protrudes through flash hole and ignites
the powder charge
- The powder rapidly converts to expanding gasses and fill chamber in very short order
- The cartridge gives at the weakest point which is the bullet and it is forced from case into the barrel
- The 7,92x57mm case shrinks to nearly original size, allowing extraction
7,92x57 RELOADING PROCEDURE
- Examine each 7,92x57mm Case and discard any that are not
in acceptable condition
- Full Length resize the Case back to original dimensions / eject the spent Primer
or Neck size depending on your requirements
- Clean the Primer Pockets
- Trim the Cases and Chamfer if necessary
A Lee Case trimmer works well
- Clean the Cases
- Seat a new Primer in the 7,92x57mm Case's Primer Pocket
- Fill the primed case with a carefully measured Powder
charge.
Consult a reloading manual!
- Seat the Bullet with a Bullet Seating Die to the proper depth
- Crimp the 7,92mm bullet in place to secure it
